Infants Outperform AI in "Commonsense Psychology"
Infants outperform artificial intelligence in detecting what motivates other people’s actions, finds a new study by a team of psychology and data science researchers. To develop a foundational understanding of the differences between humans’ and AI’s abilities, the researchers conducted a series of experiments with 11-month-old infants and compared their responses to those yielded by state-of-the-art learning-driven neural-network models.

Librarians are Finding Thousands of Books No Longer Protected by Copyright Law
DCL and the New York Public Library (NYPL) were recently profiled in Vice magazine's Motherboard, a multiplatform, multimedia publication. The article details the NYPL's impressive project to digitize the Catalog of Copyright Entries in order to create a resource for the world. Making informed decisions about whether something is under copyright isn’t as straightforward as it sounds, mostly because the inquirer needs to know what questions to ask and where that data lives. This project will ultimately provide a resource to understand what works are no longer under copyright. DCL played a pivotal role in this project, providing scanning and structure of the Catalog of Copyright Entries.

Data Migration—Analog Style!
How do you move 4,000,000 books?! The National Library of Israel moved its collections—not once, but twice—from one location to another. On January 10, 2023, the transfer of all the books from the National Library of Israel’s current location on the Givat Ram campus to its new home was completed. Since its establishment, the Library has undergone many changes, both in terms of its location and its collections. However, the transfer of its books on such a massive scale from one building to another was carried out only twice: in 1960, and in 2022. Read about how this major data migration was accomplished and what technology was involved to make it happen.

Day in the Life: Story of a Tech Writer
A technical writer is someone who helps people to understand how to use things like computers, mobile phones, machines, toys, and even medication. After the writer talks to the engineers who built or created the thing they need to write about, a technical writer then imagines they are the person that has to use the machine and finds a way to explain how to use, repair or maintain it in a way that is easy for them to understand. This guest blog post by DCL's partner Dipo Ajose-Coker, Product Ambassador at Componize Software, breaks down what a typical day looks like for a technical writer. Dipo has a long history of tech writing and leading tech documentation teams.
